A 314-pound baby? Meet the elephant named Kirby, Houston Zoo’s newest addition

A 314-pound baby elephant is the newest addition to the Houston zoo.

According to the zoo, Kirby was born on Friday afternoon, November 15. Her 34-year-old mother, Shanti, was in labor for 19 hours and gave birth in the cow barn at the Texas-based zoo’s McNair Asian Elephant Habitat.

“Kirby was standing within six minutes, walking 25 minutes later, and began nursing within an hour and a half of being born,” the zoo said in a press release. “Shanti has been under the watchful care of the Zoo’s elephant and veterinary teams throughout her 21-month long pregnancy.”
