Growing appetites: How to make those school lunches healthier

Healthy eating is essential for growing children – and that’s why packing a nutritious lunch is key to ensure that back-to-school season is full of growth in both their bodies and minds.

When packing a school lunch, daily calories recommended varies depending on a child’s age and activity level, said Kelly Layton, registered dietitian at Nationwide Children’s – Toledo.

“If we are talking about an elementary school child, [aim for] anywhere from 300 to 500 calories for a [lunch] meal,” she advised. “A middle school might need 400 to 600 [and a] high schooler might [need] 500 to 700.”…
