Alabama Health officials locate family feared to have rabid kitten

GOOD NEWS!! 7:00 PM UPDATE: The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is pleased to report  public health authorities have identifying information for the individual who has a kitten from the same litter as the kitten who tested positive for rabies. Measures will be taken to evaluate the littermate for rabies, and any potential human exposure will be followed up on.

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (WRBL) – A high-stakes search is over as Alabama public health officials located an Atlanta, Georgia family who unknowingly took in a stray kitten dumped on Tuskegee University’s campus that may be infected with rabies. The family reportedly took it home directly after locating the kitten on campus. This kitten was not taken to a shelter. Health officials confirm one of the kitten’s littermates has already tested positive for the deadly virus. The Alabama Department of Public Health said the kitten was approximately 4 to 6 weeks of age. Other kittens in the litter are also being tested for rabies.
