CFP thoughts and Auburn
If this year has done anything, it has only reinforced my idea that you need a good quarterback to win the whole thing, but you don’t need a once-in-a-lifetime player at that position. Auburn had that in Cam Newton, and it was the biggest reason why the Tigers won in 2010, but for the most part it has been a talented roster with a solid quarterback that has won it all. You’ve had a few really good quarterbacks win the title, but they did it with really good talent around them. That’s the perfect storm, but it hasn’t happened very much. Deshaun Watson was a talented quarterback, but that Clemson team had some elite players on both sides of the ball. Obviously, those Alabama teams that won titles had Tua and Jalen Hurts at quarterback, but also had a ridiculous amount of talent. Same with that LSU team that Joe Burrow led to the title.
The most obvious example of roster over elite quarterback was Georgia. Stetson Bennett led them to back to back titles, but it was the collection of players that made the difference. He just steered the ship…
