Idaho Finalizes Water Agreement to Support Agriculture and Preserve Resources

BOISE – On November 14th, Idaho Governor Brad Little and Lt. Governor Scott Bedke announced the finalization of a new water agreement aimed at safeguarding the state’s agricultural industry, preserving water resources, and reinforcing Idaho’s control over its water. This agreement, achieved after a year of negotiations, includes a mitigation plan to address the water needs of Idaho’s farmers and conserve water for future generations.

Governor Little emphasized Idahoans’ capability to resolve their own challenges and highlighted the collective effort that resulted in the agreement. He also acknowledged Lt. Governor Bedke’s role in building consensus on this issue. Bedke expressed satisfaction that Idaho’s agricultural economy and long-term water availability were prioritized, noting that the agreement required candid discussions and collaboration among stakeholders.

Key elements of the agreement focus on sustaining the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer (ESPA), an essential water source for southern and eastern Idaho. The plan is designed to protect senior water rights and prevent potential depletion of farmland.
