The SAPD conducted a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday night. They have released the results:

  • 17 citations issued
  • 4 DUI arrests

These Checkpoints are funded by the State of California’s Office of Traffic Safety. Typically the police officers who work at these Checkpoints are hand-picked by the Chief of Police and get quite a bit of overtime pay.

This Checkpoint generated four DUI arrests which is good news. Taking drunks off the street is a major public safety win!

It is hard to say what the 17 citations were for. These are likely Vehicle Code Violations and could include:

  • Speeding
  • Driving without a valid license
  • Following too closely
  • Red-light tickets
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Disobeying a police officer
  • Evading a police officer
  • Forgery or falsification of registration stickers
  • Failure to attach or display a license plate
  • Defacing or interfering with a traffic control device
  • Driving through a safety zone

Typically police departments will stage motorcycle officers around the Checkpoint. If they see a car try to evade the Checkpoint they will pull them over and do a spot check to see if the driver is under the influence…
