While it still might be a debate on whether Texas has the oldest or longest highway or, one thing IS for certain is that Texas has one of the most unique highways in the entire United States. Texas State Highway 165 might not appear too strange, until you look at where it IS.
Texas State Highway 165 was designed exclusive for cemetery use
Texas State Highway 165 is just over half a mile long (0.512 miles to be precise) but it IS indeed an official highway that has its own TXDot entry. Located in Austin, SH 165 became an official highway on August 1, 1930 that runs along Comal St as well as East 11th Street.
The highway starts at the entrance of the Texas State Cemetery and ends right at the center of the cemetery that’s near East 7th Street. Before you ask, yes there is a posted speed limit too. You’re only allowed to drive 10mph on SH 165. However you are NOT allowed to drive this highway at night as the Cemetery closes at 5pm.
This is probably the only time a highway would be closed in Texas (that’s not because of endless construction).
Some people have posted videos of them showing the highway so people can see that there is indeed the proper signage inside the Texas State Cemetery. If you DO decide to drive on SH 165 yourself, please be respectful because you ARE driving passing by people’s resting places. So be mindful and keep your eyes on the road…
