Hilo native and Army special teams coordinator Sean Saturnio has been named the 2024 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Assistant Coach of the Year.
The former University of Hawaii wide receiver is in his 11th season as an assistant coach with the Army Black Knights and his sixth year as the special teams coordinator.
Prior to his tenure at West Point, Saturnio served as head coach at Waipahu High School from 2002 to 2010, where he led the Marauders to two Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) Division II titles and six postseason appearances.
Saturnio has been a finalist for the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year award twice before, in 2021 and 2022. This season, his special teams unit has excelled, highlighted by two blocked field goals by linebacker Elo Modozie and a flawless performance from senior kicker Trey Gronotte, who is 50-for-50 on PATs…
