Decatur Community Shaken as Juvenile Left Critical in Rainbow Creek Park Shooting

A juvenile male was left critically injured following a shooting incident at a neighborhood park in Decatur, as reported by the DeKalb County Police Department. The shooting occurred at Rainbow Creek Community Park on the 2600 block of Rainbow Creek Drive around 11 a.m. yesterday. Upon arrival, police found the boy with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.

Investigators, scrutinizing the basketball courts and parking lot for clues, believe that the altercation leading to gunfire stemmed from a dispute. Still reeling from the sound of gunshots interrupting their preparations for the Georgia Bulldogs football game were residents Dexter Smalls and his wife. “My wife and I were here getting ready for the football game and I heard, I’m not sure if I heard one or two shots, but I did hear at least one shot,” Smalls told FOX 5 Atlanta. Smalls, deeply affected by the violence in his typically serene neighborhood, described it as heartbreaking, especially given the involvement of young people.

The identity of the victim has not been released, and as of yet, no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting.
