Growing concern among cities over online sales tax revenues

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – A topic the mayors in the Big 10 Mayor’s Conference talked about is the growing concern over what some mayors consider issues with Alabama’s tax structure.

For example, according to Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Amazon gets a huge tax break over ‘mom and pop’ brick and mortar stores. In other words, some mayors say they are losing millions in online sales taxes.

“Certainly cities are losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year in the way its structured. But even worse, it’s taking away from our local businesses, over taxing rural Alabama and it’s also taking away from our police department, our fire department, our investment in our infrastructure. I think we should treat everyone fairly, and I don’t think Amazon and those other companies in California and Oregon should be getting tax breaks if we’re not giving to the main street businesses here in Alabama,” said Mayor Maddox…
