Arizona’s Asian communities are cooking with ‘symbolism’ for Lunar New Year

Eva Li loves to cook. She makes an elaborate six, eight or 10-dish meal for her family (even numbers are lucky) every Lunar New Year, as long as she’s not too busy with the other thing that takes up her time during the holiday: organizing Phoenix Chinese Week’s huge Lunar New Year festival.

Lunar New Year, which begins on Jan. 19 this year, heralds the arrival of spring and is observed by many different cultures and countries. This year, Jan. 29 marks the beginning of the year of the snake, but celebrations across the metro Phoenix area will last for weeks after.

In China, people visit their hometowns, resulting in the world’s largest annual human migration. Li said a family meal will greet the sojourners when they return home…
