Councilman Mark Freeman jumped to an early lead over former Mayor Scott Smith in Mesa’s mayoral race, according to preliminary unofficial election results Tuesday.
Maricopa County dropped its first round of ballots at 8 p.m. that showed Freeman capturing 51.12% of the votes to Smith’s 48.88%. Mayor John Giles is termed out of office.
