St. George’s Church in Flushing Receives Sacred Sites Grant

The New York Landmarks Conservancy has announced 16 Sacred Sites Grants totaling $321,000 awarded to 15 historic religious properties throughout New York State, including $23,000 to St. George’s Church in Flushing, to help fund chapel roof and gutter restoration.

Erected in 1853-54, to the designs of Wills & Dudley, St. George’s Episcopal Church is a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture. In 1894, John King James designed a very contextual chancel wing that matches the vocabulary of the sanctuary, and in 1907-08, Charles Haight designed a parish hall and chapel wing to the southwest of the sanctuary. In 1930 and 1937, a larger parish hall and auditorium wing, both by Montclair, NJ architect John C. Dodd was added to the rear. The churchyard includes an early burial ground retaining about 50 markers.

St. George’s, with three active multi-lingual congregations, reaches about 225 people beyond its membership through activities such as counseling, English-language classes, musical events, art exhibitions, ballet classes, after-school programs, and serves as an assembly place for large public events…
