Rapid City, S.D. – As soon as Christmas wraps up, many people get antsy to get rid of their Christmas tree. Beginning on Thursday in Rapid City – natural trees, wreaths, garlands and other Christmas greenery can be disposed of free of charge.
There will be locations at Fitzgerald Stadium, West Boulevard Nort, and the landfill. Darrell Shoemaker, the Rapid City Communications Coordinator, said, “It is free of charge. There are a few protocols we have to follow. We ask that you don’t have trees in plastic bags. We want to make sure the trees are free of ornamentation. Make sure they don’t have tree stands on the trees as well. Just basically the free-standing tree.”
The tree disposal program will continue through January 31st. Last year, the Solid Waste Division collected nearly 50 tons of Christmas greenery. When solid waste does get these trees, it composts them at the landfill…
