Rapid City S.D. – During the Pennington County Board of Commissioners meeting. Davis Purcell, the director of Pennington County Buildings and Grounds and Brian Mueller the sheriff of Pennington County presented some options to the county commission for a jail expansion here in Rapid City.
The current Pennington County jail has been at capacity or above capacity since 2017. Purcell and Mueller proposed multiple different options for different sized jails that we could see starting to be built soon. Some offering hundreds of new beds for inmates.
Pennington County Sheriff Brian Mueller said, “If we choose option A, by the time it’s built and operational, that’ll be 100% full. We will be exactly where we are today. And we’re going to need to figure out the funding source to build an expansion. And I would tell you also that you can build on top of existing space, but the cost to do that is extremely high, and I think that if we make the right decision today, we’re going to save our kids and our grandkids millions of dollars in the future.”…
