LUVERNE, M.N. (Dakota News Now) – At the South Dakota-Minnesota border off of Interstate 90, a large “Minnesota Welcomes You” sign stands tall and greets travelers into the Land of 10,000 Lakes. However, there are attempts to replace that signage with another midwestern state due to a proposed boundary change.
A recent proposal from a state senator in Iowa stirred up plenty of discussion. Senator Mike Bousselot said he would propose a bill to purchase nine Minnesota counties.
Just a few years ago, two bills were introduced in the Minnesota legislature that would have moved the South Dakota-Minnesota border inland. The first in 2021 would have given all of western South Dakota to the Mount Rushmore state.
