Shooting shuts down Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach

One person is dead and an officer was shot Tuesday evening in north Long Beach following a standoff with an armed man, according to police and Mayor Rex Richardson.

Officers were called to the area of Atlantic Avenue and 52nd Street for a report of a man armed with a gun at about 3:15 p.m. There, police officers sought additional support from a hostage negotiator and mental evaluation team to try to reason with the man.

After all efforts failed, a SWAT team was deployed.
