Local recycling center tackles holiday waste surge with 150 tons processed daily

RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — For 22-year-old Nicolas Bielser, talking trash isn’t a bad thing —it’s just business. At Nevada Recycling and Salvage, there’s no shortage of trash. Every day, the 60,000-square-foot facility removes 150 tons of waste before it ends up in a landfill.

“It’s a dirty job that cleans up the holidays,” said General Manager Terry Bentley. “All the purchases made at home and by commercial businesses—we see the impact here by the pile size. We’ll keep going through this material; it will shrink as we get caught up with the holiday season.”

According to Stanford University, Americans toss 25% more trash from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, producing an additional one million tons of waste every week. It’s a statistic that provides job security for Bielser and his team of 24 sorters on the belt line…
