A marathon mission. Derwin Graham and Space City Elite strive to be model for Black runners

Peruse Derwin Graham’s website and you will find no mention of his career as an athlete. You will see that he earned his undergraduate degree in journalism/new media as a Baylor Bear, then later received a Masters of Fine Arts in documentary film-making from the University of North Texas.

You will also learn that, for a man who’s only 31 years old, he already has a remarkable résumé as a sports producer and documentary filmmaker with pivotal roles in projects such as the Primetime Emmy Award-winning ESPN docu-series, “The Last Dance” under his belt.

However, there’s not a word on the directdergraham.com site about his having been a nationally ranked runner at Copperas Cove High School before joining Baylor’s track team as a scholarship athlete in 2011. Or that he subsequently helped coach Texas Southern’s team to two SWAC indoor and outdoor track titles, then later organized a hyper-serious local running group, Space City Elite, with help from his close friend Ra’Shaude Kenney…
