Halifax County tragedy: Family confrontation ends in death and shocking legal outcome

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Nate Martin pleaded guilty Monday to sex crimes involving a minor and was sentenced to 15 to 27 months in Mecklenburg County Jail in North Carolina. Martin, who was dating the victim’s older sister, admitted to having sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl and faced two counts of indecent liberties with a minor.

The case emerged following a tragic incident in December 2023 involving Brandy and James Cox, a couple from Halifax County. They traveled to Charlotte to confront Martin over his sexual relations with their underage family member. During the confrontation, Martin shot both Brandy and James Cox, resulting in Brandy’s death. James Cox survived the shooting.

Brandy Cox’s father, Warren Cook, expressed disbelief over the incident, saying, “Brandy was big and Brandy was strong, but she had no weapons so I don’t know how they could determine she was gonna kill ’em with her hands.”…
