Davenport man arrested; charged with assaulting, robbing great uncle

A Davenport man was arrested after police say he and a woman broke into his great uncle’s home, then assaulted and robbed him.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim in the incident went to the Davenport Police Station on October 13 at about 8:58 a.m. to report a burglary. The victim said that on October 12 at about 3:30 a.m. he was inside his bedroom in his apartment when he saw movement on the porch outside of the bedroom glass sliding door. The door opened and two people entered, a man and a woman. The defendant, identified as Tavaris Lane, 41 of Davenport, got on top of the victim while he was still lying on the bed and began striking him in the face and head area. The woman began going through the closets inside the apartment during the assault. Lane attempted to get behind the victim and strangle him, but the victim was able to get away and fell onto the floor. The victim yelled that he was going to have a heart attack, and both Lane and the woman fled the apartment with a medium size black bag containing the victim’s bank statements, Social Security card, marriage license and other personal information.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim suffered bruising and swelling around his head and face and told officers that he immediately recognized Lane as his great nephew and identified him to officers. The victim told investigators that he had seen the Lane twice the day before the assault. The victim briefly invited Lane and the woman from the incident into his apartment on October 11 at about 3 p.m. During this visit, Lane and the woman entered and exited through the rear sliding door. The victim told investigators that Lane and the woman were wearing the same clothes when they came into the apartment on October 12 at 3:30 a.m.

A warrant for Lane’s arrest was served on November 19, according to court records, and he was booked into the Scott County Jail on November 21 on charges of first-degree burglary , second degree robbery and fifth degree theft . He has a preliminary hearing on November 26…
