The shelves are mostly empty, and meat and produce are no longer stocked with less than a month until the Feb. 7 closure of the Safeway supermarket along the Fillmore commercial corridor. Soon, shoppers will have to pick up their prescription medications elsewhere, too, as a pharmacy chain closes two nearby locations.
Residents from three neighborhoods surrounding the soon-to-close supermarket at 1335 Webster St. are already looking elsewhere for groceries, according to local leaders.
“They put out a big sale, half off,” said Erris Edgerly, founder of the Fillmore Alliance, who organized Fillmore, Japantown and Western Addition residents to rally against the closure. “The store is basically closed at this point.”…
