Santa Rosa police arrested a man suspected of starting a series of fires near an elementary school this week, officials said.

From Sept. 16 to 20, firefighters responded to and extinguished four small brush fires in the area of Southwest Community Park at 1698 Hearn Avenue, adjacent to Meadow View Elementary School, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department. The fires all burned less than an acre of land and were put out without any damage to structures, police said.

The most recent fire, set on the elementary school’s property around 1 p.m. Friday, burned one-quarter acre and prompted the school to shelter-in-place due to heavy smoke. …
