Hillbilly Squirrel Hunt brings Newton Ransom together in support of local fire company

LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — An annual fundraiser in Newton Ransom is bringing the community together with a unique tradition that’s been going strong for over a decade.

The Newton Ransom Volunteer Fire Company hosted its 12th annual Hillbilly Squirrel Hunt this weekend. Teams of two competed to bring in up to six squirrels, with prizes awarded to the top three teams based on total combined weight. This year, 32 teams participated, all coming together for some friendly competition.

“We started off a little over 12 years ago. We’ve been doing it at the fire company for 12 years now, but it started off in our resident’s garage just to get people together. Then he handed it over to us, and we’ve been doing it since then and taking it over,” said Tony DeCicco, a firefighter at Newton Ransom Volunteer Fire Company…
