Kiel Municipal Band concert Nov. 8 at PAC

The Kiel Municipal Band will present a fall concert on Friday, Nov. 8 starting at 7 p.m. at the Kiel High School Performing Arts Center.

This concert is part of the Friends of Kiel Performing Arts Series.

This concert’s theme is “Musical Storytelling,” showcasing music that conveys or enhances a narrative tale. John Philip Sousa wrote a number of marches that did exactly this. The band will lead off with his unusual march, “The Volunteers.” It was written during World War I for the Department of Patriotic Services and is dedicated to the shipyard workers who were building America’s emergency fleet. A request was made to include sounds heard in the shipyard, so Sousa complied by including a siren (to signal the start of the day’s work), an anvil and a riveting machine. Sections of the march were named “The Call to March,” “Getting Busy,” and “Laying the Keel Blocks.” For this performance, the KMB has used various tools to approximate the sounds that Sousa wanted and to tell the story of a day at the Navy Shipyard…
