New record ‘living fossil’ bowfin fish caught on New Jersey creek

A New Jersey state record bowfin was landed last month on the Mantua Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River.

The fisherman was Frank Hubert Jr, who resides in Wilmington, Delaware. Hubert told the Asbury Park Press he frequently comes to New Jersey to fish the freshwater for bowfin, which is considered a “living fossil,” because it belongs to a primitive family of fish and is the only surviving species of that family.
