Wilson Christian teams settle for runner-up status in NCCSA championship meet

KERNERSVILLE — For the last two years at the North Carolina Christian School Association cross-country championships, Wilmington Christian has been chasing Wilson Christian, which swept the girls and boys state titles in 2022 and 2023.

This year, the Patriots caught the Chargers and Lady Chargers as Wilmington Christian interrupted Wilson Christian’s reign by the sweeping the 2024 NCCSA championships Thursday, Oct. 31, at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex.

The Wilson Christian boys, who had won four straight NCCSA crowns, had all four scoring runners finish in the top 10, earning the Chargers 20 points. However, the Patriots pulled off that feat with even higher finishes to post the winning score of 17 point. The girls meet was just as tight with Wilmington Christian edging the Lady Chargers 22-26.

Junior Conner Ford, the Wilson County boys champion, set the pace for the Chargers with a third-place time of 18 minutes, 24.92 seconds on the 5K course, just ahead of eighth grade teammate Aaron Hicks in fourth place at 18:42.75…
