Alvarez’s three-touchdown night sends Wooster past Sparks 20-19

The Wooster Colts hosted Sparks in a Friday night classic, barely staving off the Railroaders 20-19 in a game where Wooster running back A.Z. Alvarez ran in three touchdowns.

“A win is a win this early in the season,” Wooster head coach Bo Sellers said. “We had some opportunities to break away in the first half, and we didn’t get those things done. We hit some adversity right away in the third quarter. Our kids came through in the end and showed their true mental toughness, and that helped us preserve the win at the end.”

Wooster got the game rolling early. After back-to-back fumbles from both teams, Alvarez ran in his first rushing touchdown of night with 4:08 left in the first. Then, just three minutes later, Alvarez got to the end zone once again with 1:08 left — set up by Wooster quarterback Junior Amezola completing a 30-yard pass to junior tight end Parker Smith.
