Johnny Williams named Shrine Bowl MVP as ECU signees show out in Carolinas all-star game

East Carolina had plenty of future talent on display in the 88th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C., as North Carolina took down South Carolina, 49-24, in the postseason all-star game. Havelock standout Johnny Williams, an ECU signee, won the game’s Most Valuable Player award after scoring four touchdowns. He had five carries for 27 yards and three touchdowns, and caught one pass for 51 yards and a score, finding paydirt four times.

Also participating in the game for team North Carolina were linebacker Kendric Davis and offensive lineman Jonathan Stokes, as well as team South Carolina participants tight end Stephen Collier and offensive lineman Kendall Walton. Collier had a big day for South Carolina with six catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams scored all three of his rushing touchdowns from the ‘Wildcat’ formation as quarterback, which he spent some time playing at Havelock over his varsity career. Williams’ 51-yard score came in the fourth quarter on a trick play, double pass, where he out-ran a cornerback in one-on-one coverage, beating him easily for the 51-yard score on the perimeter…
