Upstate Habitat for Humanity organizations reflect on Pres. Jimmy Carter’s impact

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — As the country honors the life of President Jimmy Carter, he is being remembered for his decades-long work with Habitat for Humanity.

“The Carters got involved with Habitat in March of 1984 by visiting Americus, Georgia, which is where Habitat was founded,” Tamara Dourney, the executive director of Pickens County Habitat for Humanity, said. “They quickly realized that their values aligned with the values of the organization. From there, they wanted to be more involved.”

President Carter and First Lady Rosalynn started the Carter Work Project where they traveled the world building homes for people in need. According to Habitat for Humanity, the couple built, renovated and repaired 4,447 homes in 14 countries. Their impact is felt across the Upstate of South Carolina…
