Nashville Mayor issues support for group bid to bring women’s soccer to Music City

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell is supporting a bid to bring professional women’s soccer to Music City.

Mayor O’Connell sent a letter on September 18 to the National Women’s Soccer League headquarters in New York to express his “enthusiastic support” for a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) franchise in Nashville. “I believe bringing an NWSL team to our community would have a profoundly positive impact,” Mayor O’Connell writes in the letter. “The introduction of a NWSL franchise in Nashville would not only provide a platform for talented female athletes to showcase their skills but also inspire young girls and boys to pursue their dreams in sports.”

Mayor O’Connell’s letter adds he pledges his support to help make a team in Nashville a reality by reducing “any governmental red tape and expediting traditional developmental approvals” as well as working on scheduling events at Geodis Park, which currently is home to the men’s Nashville Soccer Club…
