FCPD Open Data Portal shows year-end crime trends around Richmond Highway Corridor

Based on an analysis of year-end data from the Fairfax County Police Open Data Portal’s* Crime Mapping Dashboard by Mount Vernon On the MoVe, an overall increase in crimes against person and property around the Richmond Highway Corridor from 2023 to 2024 was largely attributable to a surge in simple assaults and larcenies.

According to the dashboard, within the Mount Vernon Police District — which includes the Richmond Highway Corridor from the City of Alexandria to Fort Belvoir — overall crimes against person rose from around 1,541 in calendar year (CY) 2023 to 1,767 in CY 2024; however, the total number of aggravated assaults and forcible sex offenses fell during that same time frame, and the number of homicides remained the same — two. Simple assaults rose from approximately 1,342 in CY 2023 to 1,599 in CY 2024.

In terms of crime against property, FCPD’s dashboard showed that the overall number of crimes increased in the Mount Vernon Police District from around 3,039 in CY 2023 to 3,475 in CY 2024; however, the total number of stolen vehicles fell year over year, and the number of burglaries and robberies didn’t substantially change.
