An hours-long standoff in Modesto concluded early Tuesday when a suspect was arrested after deputies deployed tear gas into an apartment. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Christion Xavier Carter, led the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase that began as a suspected drunk driving incident on Monday night, according to FOX40.

The ordeal started when deputies tried to pull over Carter’s vehicle after it was spotted weaving in and out of traffic at 9:45 p.m. Instead of complying, Carter led a pursuit, during which he struck a Stanislaus Fire SUV. No injuries were reported from either the deputies or carter during the incident, as reported by the Gold Rush Cam. The pursuit ended at the Redwood Apartments on Yosemite Boulevard, where Carter initially refused to surrender.

Authorities were aware that Carter had a previously issued narcotics-related warrant out of Texas and was likely armed, prompting a response from the SWAT team and hostage negotiators. Despite their efforts for a peaceful resolution, Carter continued to resist, resulting in the decision to use tear gas.
