Bridgeport school board slashes another 31 jobs in second round of budget cuts amid its $32M deficit

BRIDGEPORT — The city school board approved a second round of budget cuts Monday, trying to trim a $32 million deficit by eliminating more than 30 positions, including a handful of school counselors and social workers.

The nine-member panel also voted to seek bids from outside accounting firms to conduct an audit of the school system’s finances to determine the cause of the massive shortfall and to identify potential savings.

The newly approved layoffs are on top of the 45 administrative and central office positions the board voted to eliminate last month as part of the first stage in what is expected to be a series of budget cuts…
