Houston sustained its hot start while WVU fizzled out as the Cougars extended their home winning streak to 32 games with a 70-54 win over the Mountaineers Wednesday.
Both teams started red-hot on offense as No. 10 Houston (13-3, 5-0 Big 12) started 7-9 from the floor and West Virginia (12-4, 3-2) began 7-11. At that point, the game was tied 18-18 midway through the first half.
WVU thrice from beyond the arc early on, making four of its first five three-pointers. Javon Small made three in the first six minutes for an early nine points. Houston started playing more aggressive defense on Small, double-teaming him as soon as he crossed half-court, and WVU’s offense couldn’t find a second option.
