City leaders approve plan for former West Ashley Piggly Wiggly location

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – After seven years of a back-and-forth debate and minimal progress being made, officials have approved a comprehensive development plan for the old Piggy Wiggly site in West Ashley.

Located on Sumar Street, between Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Old Towne Road, the two-and-a-half-acre parcel of land was once home to a Piggly Wiggly grocery store before it was torn down in 2018.

When the city first bought the property in 2017, leaders planned for the space to include a parking deck, city offices and green space, City of Charleston spokeswoman Deja Knight McMillan said in the announcement…
