Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter could be days away from winning the Heisman Trophy. But his path to college football’s top award might have been much murkier if he had decided to play elsewhere.

The former No. 1 recruit originally committed to play for Mike Norvell at Florida State before surprisingly flipping to FCS Jackson State, where Deion Sanders was still settling in as head coach. The decision to play at the FCS level was unprecedented, but Hunter quickly ascended to a power conference when Sanders accepted the job at Colorado.
