Leesburg police nab brazen car burglar trying to raid vehicles in broad daylight

A Mount Dora man was arrested for burglary when he was caught on video going inside a woman’s car and pulling on other car-door handles.

Officers responded to an undisclosed business in Leesburg regarding a vehicle burglary around 9:36 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. Dispatch advised that a man, later identified as 40-year-old Salo Rashid Coward, was pulling on multiple vehicle door handles in the business parking lot.

While canvassing the area, an officer found a man matching Coward’s description near Citizens Boulevard and U.S. Highway 441. He became defensive when asked where he was coming from, saying he did not do anything. He was later detained for further investigation, the report said.

Meanwhile, other officers spoke with two victims and an unbiased witness. The first victim advised that she reported to work earlier that morning and parked her blue 2019 Volkswagen SUV in front of the business. She and her coworkers were told to lock their vehicles at about 9:45 a.m., which was due to seeing Coward going near vehicles and pulling on their door handles, the report said…
