The streets of Chicago’s 25th (Grand Central) District are set to see an increase in police presence this weekend, specifically targeting driving under the influence (DUI). The Chicago Police Department announced that a DUI Saturation Patrol will commence this Saturday, December 14, from 6 p.m. and will continue through until Sunday, December 15, at 2 a.m. This enforcement effort aims to reduce vehicular accidents and fatalities related to impaired driving by increasing the number of roving police officers on the lookout for signs of such dangerous behavior, as noted in a press release from the Chicago Police Department.
In addition to monitoring for DUIs, officers are to also vigorously enforce traffic violations including speeding, alcohol-related offenses, and safety belt infractions. Speed detection equipment will be deployed strategically to quickly catch and penalize speeding drivers. Past saturation patrols have resulted in citations for various violations. For example, during a recent patrol in the 1st (Central) District, a total of 60 citations were issued for a range of offenses, from insurance violations to distracted driving due to cellphone use.
