Coast Guard puts Port Canaveral on storm alert with Helene approaching Florida

The U.S. Coast Guard has placed Port Canaveral on “Port Condition Whiskey” ― the lowest of four levels of alerts for approaching hurricanes or tropical storms — and urged those with vessels in the port to make preparations for potentially nasty weather.

A storm that will be traveling north through the eastern Gulf of Mexico is predicted to make landfall Thursday afternoon along Florida’s Panhandle or Big Bend region as a major hurricane, named Helene , with maximum winds predicted at 115 mph.

Florida’s East Coast could feel tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain from the hurricane. The National Hurricane Center predicts a 28% chance of tropical-storm-force winds of at least 39 mph being experienced in Cocoa Beach sometime between Wednesday and Friday, with a 3% chance of winds of at least 58 mph.
