GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Right now, U.S. farmers looking to fertilize their plants rely on imports for fertilizer ingredient potash, but a $1.3 billion loan guarantee to a Michigan company could change that.
Potash is an essential plant nutrient, according to the Michigan Potash and Salt Company. The company says it lowers costs for grocery store customers by saving water and improves crop yields.
Most potash is imported from other countries, including Russia, Belarus and Canada. Back in 2022 , a local farmer told News 8 that fertilizer costs were rising and that customers would see those rising costs on their grocery receipts.
