Injured New York State trooper begins rehab after being struck by impaired driver

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State Trooper Nicholas Abbondola has been discharged from Albany Medical Center and moved to a rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery after being struck by an allegedly impaired driver earlier this month. Law enforcement officers gathered outside the hospital Tuesday in a show of support for the trooper as he left.

Trooper Abbondola was seriously injured on November 2, 2024, while on duty. The New York State Police described his road to recovery as “long,” but praised his determination and resilience. “Nick’s unwavering determination to serve, even in the face of adversity, is truly inspiring,” the department said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The community and law enforcement organizations across New York have rallied behind Abbondola and his family.
