ALBANY — The state Education Department is replacing each school’s easily understood percentage of chronically absent students with a new “attendance index” that uses an algebraic equation to produce a three-digit number.
This will be better than the current measurement, Assistant Commissioner Theresa Billington told the state Board of Regents at a committee meeting Monday. The state rolled out a chronic absenteeism percentage for each district in the 2022-2023 school district report cards, which are created by the state.
