UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – 29 inmates at the Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy have won their lawsuit against the State of New York for an incident that took place in 2016 where they were brutally beaten and humiliated by prison officials. State Court of Claims Judge Anthony Brindisi ruled earlier this month that the actions of the Corrections Officers and their superiors were responsible for the beating administered on July 6, 2016.
Early July 6, 2016, CO Nicholas Kahl fell and sustained a head injury. He was found unconscious and bleeding on the floor. Several inmates made the call for help and were blames by guards for the injuries to Kahl. An investigation of the incident determined that Kahl’s injuries were not inflicted on him.
Later that morning a busload of guards arrived at the facility. Several of the guards removed or covered their name tags to conceal their identity. The guards then entered Dorm 4H and began to beat the 28 inmates in the dorm. Among the things testified to have happened was inmates beaten, jumped on, kicked in the face and two inmates were sodomized.
