Bill Pramuk, Trees and People in Napa Valley: Wet wintry weather heightens tree risks

A huge tree with severe decay and is ready to fall over can be rated as “Low Risk.” Another huge tree that could crush a house if it were to fall can be rated as “Low Risk.”

At first glance both of those statements might seem wrong, but both can be true. In the first instance, if there is no one or nothing of value that would be impacted, the risk rating is low. In the second instance, if the tree is unlikely to fall the risk rating is low.

Those two examples emerge from the Tree Risk Assessment system developed by the International Society of Arboriculture. Worldwide there are about 10,000 Certified Arborists who have earned the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification…
