South Dakota Red Cross member gearing up to help with hurricane relief

RAPID CITY, S.D. – As residents along Florida’s Gulf Coast brace for Hurricane Milton’s imminent landfall, over 2,100 Red Cross volunteers are already in position, prepared to offer storm relief. Among them are 92 volunteers from the Dakotas and Minnesota, including seven from South Dakota.

The region, still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Helene, is expected to face significant challenges as Milton is set to make landfall by tomorrow night.

Richard Smith, Executive Director of the Red Cross for Western and Central South Dakota, emphasized the importance of early staging. “We try and get people there pre-staged before those storms come in, which we did. Then, we work with it afterward, rotating teams every two weeks to provide continuous support,” Smith said…
