Vt. team deploys to Fla. to ahead of Hurricane Helene

PENSACOLA, Vt. (WCAX) – More than a dozen members of Vermont’s urban search and rescue team are en route to Florida to help ahead of Hurricane Helene.

The storm became a hurricane Wednesday morning and forecasters said it could become a major Category 3 or higher when it hits the Gulf coastline sometime Thursday evening.

Vermont Task Force 1 is set to arrive Wednesday night and will be based in Pensacola, performing swift water rescues. “It’s kind of like you want to give back, right? They came to help us for the better part of a year with all of the flooding that we had since July of ‘23. It’s what we train for.
