SMYRNA — The first time newly elected state Rep. Mekyah McQueen, D-Smyrna, can remember being an advocate was in the third grade.
A girl in her class — a redhead who McQueen described as a “hard pill to swallow” — was being picked on.
“I just felt like the kids weren’t giving her a chance, and I told the teacher, and I said, ‘Can you say something to the class? … and tell the kids to stop picking on her?’” McQueen recalled. “… And she — this is what teachers do — she was like, ‘Well, you tell them.’”…
