Memphis voters elected a new mayor on Tuesday, ousting incumbent Kurt D. Marter after five years in the post.
Local business owner Tammy J. Wehrum won the race with nearly 39% of the vote, or 216 votes, according to unofficial results from the Macomb and St. Clair county clerk’s offices.
“I truly care about this town, and everything I do in my business is for the betterment of our community,” she said, prior to the election. “I feel that I have the skills necessary to make a difference and will communicate with the citizens for the future growth and improvement of our city.”
Wehrum, 58, has served as the president of the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce for the past seven years and was on the Memphis Planning Commission for one year. She retired from the Marine Corps as a master sergeant after serving for 23 years in the intelligence field, and has owned the Doghouse Tavern on Main Street since 2013…
