Direct Flights from San Diego to DC Approved, Linking Biotech and Defense Sectors with National Policymakers

The U.S. Department of Transportation has given Alaska Airlines the green light to start a direct flight route from San Diego International Airport to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. This is a big win for travelers from the SoCal city who want easier access to America’s capital. Historically, San Diego was the largest U.S. market without such a service, lacking a nonstop connection to DCA.

As per the announcement from the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, the arrival of this route is set to simplify travel for folks tied to the defense and biotech sectors, all among those with stakes rooted deep in the heartbeat of governmental proceedings. This development arrives courtesy of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which loosened the ties of a longstanding perimeter rule that normally limits nonstop flights to those cities within a 1,250-mile radius of DCA unless special dispensation is granted.
